The Rise and Fall of Oscar Pistorius

He started life with many obstacles to overcome after being born without the fibula in both legs. At the age of just 11 months his legs were amputated halfway between his knees and ankles.

From this he would rise to one day win Paralympic gold medals and also he competed against able-bodied athletes in the 2012 London Olympics. It was his athletic achievements that made him one of the best known Paralympians and also athletes around the world.

This all changed on Valentine's Day in 2013. At first stories were running that said a surprise visit from his girlfriend had gone horribly wrong. Pistorius thought an intruder was in his apartment and shot and killed that person who we discovered was his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius' family has released a statement in which the fallen star said "the alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms."

"Our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family — regardless of the circumstances of this terrible, terrible tragedy."

Now we have to wonder what led to the tragic death of Steenkamp and what will be the outcome of the trial that now sees Pistorius charged with murder.

Having only seen news about his athletic achievements it comes as a great surprise to hear of the murder charges for one of South Africa's favourite sons.
