Person, kid die as race auto careens off Calif. Course

MARYSVILLE, Calif. (AP) a' A adolescent race car driver using warm-up laps at a raceway careened off the course and into pit strip, killing a 14-year-old boy and 68-year-old man, officers said. Six or seven vehicles were on the course Saturday night once the uncontrollable car ran into the two victims, who were standing side-by-side, Yuba County Sheriff's Capt. Ron Johnson said. He said the 2 were associated with one of many vehicles or drivers but did not yet know how. Neither the 17-year-old driver or someone else was injured, he said. The person was pronounced dead at the world at Marysville Raceway Park some 40 miles north of Sacramento, and the boy was declared dead sometimes at a medical facility or in a ambulance, the official told The Associated Press. The raceway was hosting the California Sprint Car Civil War Series on the opening day of its time. Steven Blakesley, the announcer calling the race from the stands, said the dash vehicles were doing alleged "hot laps" about an hour or so ahead of the race when a car driven by Chase Johnson, traveling at about 90 mph, could not produce a turn. "There should have been a technical problem," Blakesley said. "The car did not slow down. " Blakesley said the vehicle ran via a distance involving the pit and course line, hit an empty golf-style basket then ran out from the view of the stands, where fans were generally silent and left to speculation about what was happening. He said the following thing he was able to see was CPR being performed on two people, and crime scene tape rising and later a human anatomy being covered. The names of the subjects weren't immediately available. The resource on Chase Johnson's internet site said he is a at Petaluma High School north of Bay Area and is just a fourth era race car driver. Blakesley said Chase Johnson was driving for just two years already, and several on the race car circuit, seen as a stepping stone to higher levels like NASCAR, started as young as 15 as Johnson did. Where small, high-powered cars race on quick dust ovals, were older drivers whose careers had peaked early in the day, he explained others on the enterprise. The Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol were investigating to determine the reason behind the accident, Ron Johnson said. The Sheriff's Department also serves as the county's coroner and could establish the details and formal reason behind death for the 2 victims, he said. An outgoing message on the track's phone line said only that Saturday's race had been terminated, and a left for a raceway spokesman was not immediately returned. The race course deaths come less than a month after having a accident on the past lap of a at Daytona International Speedway wounded at least 30 supporters Feb. 23. The victims were sprayed with large pieces of debris a including a tire a' following a car careened into the wall that's made to protect the enormous grandstands filling the track. At still another NASCAR race last year at Talladega, the crowd was showered with debris and eight supporters were injured each time a car sailed upside-down into the front-stretch fence on a mad dash to the finish line, showering the stands with debris. Eight fans sustained minor injuries. And this year at a Hot Rod Association occasion in Chandler, Ariz., a female was killed by a crashing dragster was flown off by a tire at Firebird International Raceway. ____ Associated Press Writer Phil Dalton led for this record from La.
