Phil Brown played at Bolton Wanderers from 1988 to 1994, making more than 250 looks for the whites in the act. Brown, encouraged by former Bolton boss Bruce Rioch, gained his instruction badges while turning down his profession with Bolton, before moving to Blackpool and becoming Big Sam's secretary. The Southend United visit was made official today on the club's official web site. Brown was delighted by the opportunity, saying: "I am delighted to have now been given the chance at Southend and it is challenging I am really looking towards. "We have got seven league games between now and the end of the year, hopefully we could set a winning run together and give an opportunity to ourselves of achieving the play-offs. "We have got a couple of days of training between now and the game against Bradford that will give me a chance to take a look at the participants. "The Easter period is definitely difficult since you perform twice in such a short space of time, however it is an excellent chance to grab six points and get that earning run started." Throughout Owen Coyle's Bolton Wanderers stint, many had needed him to take on Brown as an assistant director.
