Southampton 0-3 West Brom: Baggies hitter nine-man Saints - Goal.com

The Baggies added two more after the break by buying off Saints on the counterattack, with Gaston Ramirez, goalscorer Fortune and Danny Fox also getting red cards in a eventful half. Mauricio Pochettino kept with the exact same Saints team that drew with Swansea last time out, Luke Shaw missing out with a brand new injury after recovering from the virus and Morgan Schneiderlin passed fit in time. David Clarke was without suspended Youssuf Mulumbu and hurt Chris Brunt, with Billy Jones only fit enough for the bench, so Steven Reid and Shane Long returned while Liam Ridgewell also replaced Goran Popov. The Baggies almost took an earlier lead when Lukaku broke without any Jos Hooiveld but Boruc made a superb end to deny the Belgian in the one-on-one. Nevertheless, Fortune surely could put the readers ahead from the corner after a goal-mouth scramble in which Boruc and Nathaniel Clyne did not clear the ball. And despite an excellent reaction from the hosts it had been Clarke's men who nearly hit again around the 20 second mark. John Morrison and Graham Dorrans mixed admirably to work the ball through to Lukaku once more, but Boruc got down low to produce still another good save yourself when the forward must have done better. Saints continued to dominate possession but found clear-cut odds difficult to carve out against a solid Baggies defence, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez both heading over and Nathaniel Clyne seeing a reach deflected over when he must have tried the keeper. Lambert also shot narrowly off-target with a free end, however the home part lacked any genuine penetration and were almost tried by way of a 2nd Baggies purpose as Boruc once more declined Lukaku prior to the half-time whistle. Saints boss Pochettino made a bold move at the break as he appeared to inject some creativity into his side, taking enemy Gaston Ramirez on for the more defensive Jack Cork. The opening 10 minutes were quite similar, though, before Clyne broke forward and hit the bar with a strong attack from a limited angle. Though the hosts continued to battle in attack and it absolutely was West Brom that got the 2nd goal. Lukaku was eventually in a position to defeat Boruc by rounding the owner and completing in to the clear net after Fortune's through baseball. Right after the goal, Ramirez, triggered at the break, made Saints' concern even harder by getting sent down for delivering a stray shoulder in to the face of Shane Long. Baggies attacker Fortune also acquired a card for an angry response in which his arm was raised by him. Lambert might have struck back right after if it was not for an unhealthy effect, before Schneiderlin declined Morrison with a superb falling tackle, but Saints can do nothing to prevent Long bagging a third with just more than 10 minute remaining. The striker was performed in beyond the Saints defence and concluded through Boruc's feet. There was more late crisis as Saints full-back Fox was also given a right red card for a lunge on Steven Reid in the latter stages of the overall game.
